Navigating Uncertainty Together: Strengthening Leadership, Boards and Financial Readiness

October 19, 2026

Over the past several weeks, many organizations across Minnesota’s aging network have been responding to the Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Advisory Council’s recommendations regarding the future of Live Well at Home and Eldercare Development Partnership (EDP) funding. For many providers, these conversations have raised important questions about sustainability, strategic direction and the future of services that older adults rely on every day.

At the same time, we know this uncertainty extends beyond any single funding source. Across the nonprofit sector, providers are navigating a rapidly changing funding environment, increasing demand for services, workforce challenges and evolving community needs. These pressures require organizations to think differently about how they plan, adapt and make decisions.

One theme we continue to hear in conversations with providers is the critical role that boards play during periods of change.

Strong boards help organizations move from reacting to immediate pressures toward planning for multiple possibilities. By asking thoughtful questions, understanding financial realities and working closely with leadership, an engaged and informed board can become one of an organization’s greatest assets.

Supporting Leadership and Boards Through Change

Providers do not have to navigate uncertainty alone: engaged boards, financially informed leaders and collaborative planning can help organizations prepare for change.

Our EDP Coordinators are available to support aging services providers as they navigate opportunities, challenges and emerging needs across the aging network. As organizations assess the implications of policy changes, funding uncertainty and shifting community needs, our EDP team can facilitate focused conversations with leadership staff and board members about priorities, risks and practical next steps.

Whether your organization is exploring potential funding scenarios, evaluating strategic priorities, identifying opportunities for collaboration and partnership or something else entirely, our team brings experience from across the nonprofit sector, along with deep knowledge of aging services and Minnesota’s aging network.

We understand the unique realities facing providers and are committed to helping organizations identify practical approaches that strengthen resilience and position them for future success. If a conversation with your leadership team or board would be helpful, we welcome the opportunity to connect and discuss your organization’s needs.

Building Financial Confidence for Leadership and Boards

One practical way to prepare for uncertainty is ensuring that both staff and board leaders have a shared understanding of organizational finances.

A free, three-part Financial Literacy Workshop Series with Propel for Nonprofits offers leaders and board members practical tools for understanding financial health, managing cash flow and planning for different scenarios:

  • Financial Health: November 4, 2026
  • Managing Cash Flow: February 9, 2027
  • Scenario Planning: April 6, 2027

Registration is open now!

These sessions are designed not only for executive leadership, development and operations staff, but also for board members who play an important role in governance and financial oversight.

We especially encourage organizations to invite their Board Chairs or Presidents, Vice Chairs or Vice Presidents, Treasurers, and Governance Committee members to attend alongside development, operations and finance leaders.

Participating together and using your organization’s unique circumstances can help boards and staff build a shared understanding of the organization’s financial position, distinguish financial reporting from cash flow management and approach upcoming budgeting and planning conversations with greater confidence.

A Resource for the Network

The aging network has always adapted to changing circumstances by leaning on its collective expertise, creativity and commitment to serving older adults.

MAAA’s EDP Coordinators are a resource during these moments. They are here to support providers, facilitate meaningful conversations, connect organizations to resources and help identify collaborative solutions that strengthen the network as a whole.

By planning together, strengthening financial understanding and drawing on the network’s collective expertise, Minnesota’s aging services providers can remain responsive, resilient and prepared to support older adults and caregivers for years to come.
